Biography
Rickard Rydell is one of the pilots in best shape among those currently disputing the WTCC. This Swede, born in 1967 and with broad experience in touring car racing, started off in karting and later went on to the British and Japanese F3. In 1994, Rydell started in touring car competitions, and since then has become a specialist in this modality, participating on seven occasions in the British Championship, where he won in 1998. In 2001 he tried his fortune in the FIA GT Championship, with a Ferrari 550 Maranello, later moving on, in 2002, to the European Touring Car Championship, which became the World Touring Car Championship in 2005.
Last season, the Swedish driver competed in the GT Championship, apart from participating in the Le Mans 24 hours, dominating his category. Starting from June, Rydell was back in the WTCC when the season had already started. He dominated the race held in his own country, and faced with the season’s last race in Macao, he was chosen by SEAT to complete the team and to be one of the pillars of the Spanish brand in its struggle for the constructor and driver titles.
In 2008 Rydell resigned for SEAT and joined one of the strongest teams in the WTCC Championship, something they won in the penultimte date of the year. he won races in Estoril and Japan, and was second on four occasions, he was also third one time, results that brought the reward of fifth overall position.
In 2009 his objective will be to fight for the title once again and at the same time help SEAT to rewin the constructors championship, confirming the great potential the team demonstrated last years when it won the two tiles up for grabs.
