Biography
Tiago Monteiro, affectionately nicknamed “Vagaroso” -slow, in Portugese-, was born in Porto, Portugal, in July 1976. Encouraged by his father, Monteiro started competing in France in the Porsche Carrera Cup at 21 years of age. He took five victories and five pole positions, becoming the Champion of the B category and rookie of the year. The following year, in 1999, he took a victory and three podiums, proclaiming himself runner-up in France, apart from participating in the Le Mans 24 Hours. One year later he was again runner-up at the French F3 Championship, with four victories, and also participated in the European F3 Championship, where he was second again.
In 2002, Tiago moved on to International Formula 3000, and also had the chance to try out a Formula 1 car for the first time, with the Renault team in Barcelona. The following year he participated in the Champ Car World Series, before becoming a test driver for Minardi in the year 2004, year during which he also competed in the World Series by Nissan, where he was runner-up. It was the year when the doors of Formula truly opened up to him, and Monteiro made his debut behind the wheel of one of the Jordan team single-seaters, managing to set the record of races completed in a single season -eighteen-.
His best result that season was a podium in the controverted United States Grand Prix, where all the drivers equipped with Michelin tyres decided to withdraw. Monteiro was one of the just six drivers on the starting grid, and finished third behind Schumacher and Barrichelo’s Ferraris. In 2006, this time with the Midlands team, Monteiro had a difficult season, which led him to try his luck with SEAT in the WTCC, where he took a pole position and three podiums. In his second season in the WTCC Monteiro became even better, winning two times, in Mexico and Estoril, although a little inconsistency made him finish 12th overall.
2009 will be his third with the team and one where he will have to help the team rewin the constructors´ title won last year ith one of the stronngest teams on the grid.
