Good start to the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic for the Repsol riders after the first qualifying session. MotoGP Valentino Rossi, who every day sees as rivals cut further the distance, has struggled in the final minutes to claim the provisional pole by just over a tenth ahead of ahead of compatriot Max Biaggi. His teammate Tohru Ukawa, almost one hundred percent recovered from his injuries in England, set the eighth fastest to eight tenths off the provisional pole taken by his partner.
In 250cc, Fonsi Nieto reappears as the fastest driver of the category in both free practice and in the clock. In a first formal meeting-fought, Fonsi has been made with the best record after seeing Rolfo, Porto and Melandri were also moving to the pole. Toni Elias, much recovered from the injury he suffered in his left hand during the Grand Prix of Germany, has also had a strong performance throughout the day, aupándose to fourth provisional grid.
