The Repsol rider continues forging his own legend in Trial and achieves his sixth consecutive Outdoor World Championship which, added to the six Indoor titles he already has, equals the 12 World Championships achieved by British rider Lampkin.
Today’s victory at the Italian Grand Prix allowed Toni Bou to become Trial World Champion for the sixth consecutive time in the Outdoor category. The rider from Piera (Barcelona) and gathers his twelfth World Championship titles after achieving last March the sextet in Indoor. Up to now, only Britain’s Dougie Lampkin had been able to have in his track record a dozen of World Championship titles, as he took 5 in the Indoor class – one less than Bou – and 7 in the Outdoor, a number Bou could equal next season.
The triumph in Santo Stefano d’Aveto (Genoa) allowed the Repsol rider to get the World title before the last two round at the British Grand Prix. Bou’s dominion in this edition of the Outdoor World Championship was overwhelming. In the 11 rounds held, he only missed two victories – a second and a fourth place -, taking the highest step of the podium in a total of nine occasions. These results allowed him to become Champion with an advantage of 50 points over the second and third placed, Albert Cabestany i Jeroni Fajardo, respectively.
His team mate at the Repsol Montesa Honda Team, Japanese Takahisa Fujinami, finished the Italian Grand Prix in second position and keeps the fifth place in the overall standings, 13 points behind the second and third, and eight behind the fourth.
Toni Bou: “I’m very happy to have conquered the title once more, and to do it with a new win and a new prize for Montesa makes it even better. This is a great year so far, with a lot of victories that reward the job we are doing. Six Outdoor World Championships and another six in the Indoor. Right now I don’t think about what we can achieve, I just try to enjoy this intense moment. Today was a difficult day, as the injury in my leg is still affecting me. Nevertheless, the final result could not be better, both for me and for the team. We could not ask for more”.
Takahisa Fujinami: “It was a complete day, with a new Championship for Toni, another for Montesa and a second place for me in this round. In the first lap I didn’t feel very well, but I was convinced that in the next I could turn the situation upside down and that was the case. Both Toni and I improved and we finished with a great 1-2”.
The Repsol rider will arrive tomorrow, Monday, to Terminal 1 of the El Prat Airport (Barcelona) at 13:55 from Milan on Alitalia’s flight AZ7098.
