Marc Márquez win extends series lead

Second consecutive victory for Repsol rider, who now has six wins in 2012. Advantage in overall standings extends to 48 points.

One week on from his win at Indianapolis, Marc Márquez was again on the top step of the podium —this time at the Czech Republic GP. He claimed his sixth win of the season after coming out on top of a tough leading group. Thomas Luthi, Pol Espargaró and Andrea Iannone all tussled with the Repsol rider, who broke through into the lead with three laps to go and held his rivals off for another win. He thus extends his advantage in the overall standings.

Starting from fourth on the grid, Márquez got a good start that put him into third on lap one, on the tail of Thomas Luthi. As the laps went by, the Repsol rider conserved his tires and stuck with his rival, also fighting off attacks from Espargaró and Iannone. With three laps remaining, Márquez passed Luthi to go up into the lead.

With six races remaining in 2012, Márquez has 213 points in the overall standings and an advantage of 48 points over second place. He has four wins from the last five races —six overall.

“Yesterday in practice I felt very comfortable; I knew that I was ready for the race and that I could be up at the front, and also that nobody could escape with us all running a similar pace. That was how it panned out, because there was less grip today but I still rode comfortably. That was how I was able to study Luthi over the course of the race. The pace was slower than I had expected and I was able to make a plan for the final laps. When there were three to go I gave 100% to get in front, then on the last lap I closed every door in order to win. It was a different tactic to normal, but this track is a difficult one for me and I wanted to keep something in reserve.”
