With the MotoGP title sealed for Marc Marquez, teammate Dani Pedrosa’s battle for runner-up spot takes centre stage. In Moto3, Alex Marquez will defend his lead in the overall standings at Phillip Island.
Marc Marquez will start the sixteenth round of the season as the brand new MotoGP World Champion. After becoming the youngest rider to win two consecutive World Championships, the Repsol Honda Team rider still has challenges before the end of the year. Marquez can match or surpass the record for wins (12), poles (12) and points in a season (383) before the campaign comes to a close. Meanwhile, teammate Dani Pedrosa remains in a tight fight for second place, level on points with Valentino Rossi and with a 3-point lead over Jorge Lorenzo.
In Moto3, Alex Marquez leads the World Championship by 25 points. After his win in Japan, younger of the Marquez brothers looks to extend his advantage at a circuit suited to the Honda, but knows that setup will be critical due to the likely presence of wind and cold temperatures. Alex Rins has an opportunity to rejoin the fight for the title at Phillip Island after finishing 10th in Japan –where he was knocked off track by another rider on the first corner. The Spaniard took the win at Phillip Island in 2013.

“What we achieved in Japan a few days ago is still sinking in! To win the Championship in my first two years is a real dream and I must thank all my family, my team, Honda and Repsol for all their commitment and dedication. Now we can relax a little, but not too much! I still want to win races and finish the season on a high. Phillip Island was a bit of a nightmare for me last year so I have a score to settle! I like the track, it’s a lot of fun, so let’s hope the weather is nice so we can really enjoy the weekend!”

“The race in Japan was a little frustrating so I’m looking forward to getting to Phillip Island and putting it behind me. Obviously we tested there earlier in the year but we’ll have to see how are the conditions now, some months later. The goal is of course to take second place in the Championship and I will be pushing 100% to achieve this. The layout is exciting to ride and the races are always fun, but let’s hope there are no issues like in 2013!”

“We go to Phillip Island ready to give everything -plus it’s a circuit that is good for me and has fast corners that benefit us, so I will do my best to get on the podium. One goal is to get a good grid position, although often this is not enough.”

“Phillip Island is a very important track for us. It is one of my favourite tracks; last year we got fourth place, but it should be a difficult weekend because the setup is very important. The weather -the wind and the cold- sometimes play a decisive role. So we’ll try to be as focused as possible and think as we did in Japan. It’s a fast circuit that favours the Honda, but we have to pay special attention to the bike’s setup.”
