Festival of motorcycle racing begins in style with Marc Marquez, Angel Nieto and 12 riders and former riders inaugurating a photo exhibition of historical bikes –a tribute to the more than 300 Repsol riders who have defined almost half a century of motorsport history.
MotoGP has arrived in Jerez and this morning the show hit the streets. Angel Nieto, Marc Marquez and a dozen riders, both current and from recent decades, opened a photo exhibition entitled Legends of Motorsport 1969-2015: From Angel Nieto to Marc Marquez at the Claustros de Santo Domingo. Just beforehand, they delighted the people of Jerez with a trip through the centre of the Motorcycling Capital of the World in five Repsol Classic Team cars.
The fans came out to watch their idols, headed by Angel Nieto. The 12 + 1 times World Champion drove an Osca with Marc Marquez as his passenger. Behind them, Nicky Hayden, Johann Zarco, Alex Rins, Julian Simon, Maria Herrera and Enea Bastianini were in an Elva, a Fiat 124 Abarth, a BMW 2002 and a 2000 Alfa Romeo GTV, before inaugurating the exhibition of photographs and motorbikes from the nearly 50-year history of the energy company in motorsport. The event was also attended by Repsol Moto3 riders Fabio Quartararo and Jorge Navarro.
The event, overseen by the Mayoress of Jerez, Maria Jose Garcia-Pelayo, the CEO of Dorna, Carmelo Ezpeleta, and Repsol Head of Sponsorship, Beatriz Tobío, was a tribute to the teams and riders who have represented the company over the past five decades. Some of them were also present at today’s event, such as Jorge Martinez Aspar, Emilio Alzamora, Carlos Cardus and Herri Torrontegui.
In the words of Carmelo Ezpeleta, “Repsol began working very hard in the world of racing and the main force in those early days was Angel Nieto. Since then, their journey has been immense. I think the most important step, and one that still exists, was the collaboration with Honda. Since they joined forces in 1995, no other brand can boast a track record like Repsol’s in the World Championship. I want to congratulate them on their work.”
Beatriz Tobío added: “These 50 photographs are a selection of the more than 42,000 at our disposal, of which 3,000 have been recovered thanks to an important partnership with Motorpress-Iberica. In them are riders representing the more than 300 who have ridden for us, represented our values and will always be part of our family and history.”
The Mayoress, Maria José García-Pelayo, thanked Repsol for choosing Jerez to host this exhibition, “which covers the history of motorcycling and that is the work of a group of people committed to the world of motorsport.”
