Canet, Mir, Pons and Morales share the wins at the FIM CEV Repsol

Aron Canet and Joan Mir, in Moto3, Edgar Pons, in Moto2, and Carmelo Morales, in Superbike, get the highest step of the podium at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit.

The third round of the FIM CEV Repsol, held at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, saw the leaders of each class increase their advantage in their respective classifications. Aron Canet won today the first Moto3 race and finished second in the second race, in which Joan Mir was able to snatch the first place from the Valencian rider in the last lap. In Moto2, Edgar Pons finished the day with his second win of the year and Carmelo Morales did the same in Superbike.

In only two weeks, the next round of the FIM CEV Repsol will be held in MotorLand Aragon, next July 4 and 5.

Moto3 Junior World Championship
In the smallest displacement class, Aron Canet left Barcelona with a good result. The rider from Valencia took home a good loot with the first and second place at the Moto3 races. In both races, Malaysian Kharul Idham Pawi was on the podium – in second and in third place – and confirms himself as one of the great talents of this championship. The rider from Majorca Joan Mir recovered from the disappointment of the first race, in which he didn’t finish due to a technical failure, and won the second race.

In the overall standings, Aron Canet comfortably leads the way with 90 points, followed by Khairul Idham Pawi, 27 points behind, and Italian Nicolo Bulega, at 35.

Moto2 European Championship
As his performance in yesterday’s qualifying foresaw, Edgar Pons dominated the intermediate class race from flag to flag. The rider from Barcelona started from pole position after setting the fastest time –1:46.163– 6 tenths faster than the second and 1.6 seconds faster than the third. Pons confirmed his superiority in a race where no other rider was able to challenge him and crossing the Finish Line with an advantage of 7.9 seconds overt Italian Luca Marini, second. The third place was for the French rider Alan Techer.

With this result, Edgar Pons is now the only rider of the class that has been on the podium in all three races already held and takes an overall lead in Moto2 with 70 points, ahead of Xavi Vierge, with 45 points, and Luca Marini, with 44.

Superbike European Championship
Even easier was Carmelo Morales’ victory in Superbike. The rider from Barcelona, who last year suffered a serious injury on this track, didn’t leave any chance to his rivals in today’s race. Morales had a maximum advantage of more than 11 seconds over the second place, a position for which Ivan Silva and Kenny Noyes had a beautiful battle during the last laps. In the end, it was Silva who took the second step of the podium, while Noyes had to settle for third.

Carmelo Morales also leads the overall standings with 70 points, ahead of Kenny Noyes, 9 points behind, and Ivan Silva, 24 points away.

Moto3 first race winner

“The race was really difficult due to the heat. We run very well during the warm up, but despite that, we weren’t able to improve yesterday’s time and during the race we were running at low 52. In the last lap I was the first to get to corner 10 and Pawi tried to pass me, but he made a mistake and I was able to take advantage of it to win.”

Moto3 second race winner

“It was one of my best races. This morning we had a problem with the bike that we had not experienced in the whole weekend, though those things happen. I leave Barcelona with a victory and I’m happy. I want to thank the team for their work, because they improved the bike and that’s positive. This weekend’s assessment is nearly perfect: we set the pole position time yesterday and, although we couldn’t fight for victory in the first race due to an engine failure, I pushed hard in the second and we could achieve it.”

“Last weekend I was here competing as wild card and that helped. I’m very happy with how the weekend went. Since the first lap I felt comfortable on the bike and knew when to push. I had good feelings both in the front and the rear of the bike and I knew I’d be able to push, as during the practice we had a much better pace than the rest. I decided to start and push, trying not to lose concentration, which was the most difficult. I’m happy and I want to congratulate the riders that were also on the podium, as they did a great job.”

Superbike race winner

“I’m very happy because we improved from the first race of the year. The team worked a lot on the test bench and we could notice it. We have a bit more power in the straight and that helped me. From Friday everything felt easier than during the tests we did here. During the warm-up, the bike had a gear failure and the team tried to solve it on the grid, but it wasn’t possible. During the first 5 laps I pushed hard because I had to change gears with the accelerator. From the seventh lap I was able to relax and keep my advantage. I’m very happy because last year it was very bad and I felt much better this year. I leave the track very happy”.
