Bastianini places fifth in a race interrupted by rain

Canet crashes out of the race on the fifth lap after a collision from another rider.

The race, scheduled for 23 laps, was red flagged after 15 laps due to the sudden arrival of heavy rain.

Despite not finishing the race, Arón Canet remains third in the overall standings.

Bastianini’s fifth place allows him to move up to sixth in the World Championship.

“I didn’t start very well today and I had to move up positions progressively, without taking too many risks, because with the rain it was very dangerous and I knew that there would be a lot of crashes. Finally I managed to reach the top positions to fight for the victory. At that moment I saw that the sky was very cloudy and I tried to stick at the front. It was a shame that on the last lap before the red flag I was a little further back. I’m happy because I felt comfortable on the bike and it was the first time I have finished a race at Phillip Island.”

Arón Canet

“Throughout the weekend we have been riding at a good dry pace and today we have saw that was also the case in the wet. It was a difficult day because we didn’t know if the race was going to be in one set of conditions or the other and, although there was water on some sectors, we went out on track with slicks. I was very comfortable on the first few laps, but a rider hit me from behind at Turn 4 and he knocked me off. It was a racing incident and it has left us a little far off the runner-up spot, but we will fight until the end to finish the season well.”
