Marc Márquez today added another title to a brilliant list of achievements. At only 24 years old, he is already among the legends of motorsport history.
Having won his sixth world title –his fourth in MotoGP- at the age of the 24 years and 268 days, Marc Márquez is up there with the greats in terms of motorcycle racing honours.
Today, at a packed Circuit Ricardo Tormo, he became the Spanish rider with the most titles in the premier class, ahead of Jorge Lorenzo (3) and Álex Crivillé (1).
He also added his name to the list of the ten riders with the most World Championships in history, equalling Geoff Duke and Jim Redman. The list also includes John Surtees and Phil Read (with 7 titles), Carlo Ubbiali, Mike Hailwood and Valentino Rossi (9 ), Ángel Nieto (12 + 1) and Giacomo Agostini (15).
Márquez’ list of records achieve so far is almost infinite. Here are just some of them:
– In 2013 he became the youngest World Champion in the history of the premier class, at the age of 20 years and 266 days. He surpassed Freddie Spencer, who had won the title in 1983 at the age of 21 years and 258 days.
– He has become both the youngest two-time champion in the class, aged 21 years and 237 days (in 2014), and the youngest three-time champion in history (2016).
– He is the youngest rider to win a race in the premier class, aged 20 years and 63 days. He did so at the second GP of 2013.
– He is the youngest rider to achieve a pole position in the premier class (in 2013), surpassing Freddie Spencer’s record from 1982.
– He is the rider with the most pole positions in history, with 73.
– He is the youngest rider to achieve 100 podiums in the Motorcycle World Championship, aged 24 years and 240 days, ahead of Valentino Rossi (25 years and 244 days).
– He is the youngest rider in history to win ten consecutive races, a milestone reached at 21 years and 174 days, beating Mike Hailwood (24 years and 94 days).
– He was the rider to score the more points, podiums and pole positions in a rookie season in the premier class: 334 points, 16 podiums and nine pole positions in 2013.
