Alonso López places fourth in the Grand Prix of Spain

The Repsol rider crosses the line third, but is penalised for exceeding the track limits and drops a place. Arón Canet crashes out four laps from the end and Jeremy Alcoba retires after an incident on the second corner.

Alonso López, who started fifth, went off track on the third lap and dropped down to eighteenth position, recovering to move back up to seventh position with five laps to go.

On the next lap, Arón Canet made a mistake while braking at Turn 6 and collided with three other riders, taking him out of the race.

On the last four laps, Lopez fought at the front of the second group for third position.

He took the chequered flag in third place, but Race Direction penalised him a place for exceeding the track limits.

Jeremy Alcoba, who was participating as a wildcard, retired at the end of the first lap after a crash damaged his brakes.

ARÓN CANET | NC

“I started from a little far back, but I started to come back until I got up to seventh position. I had a small problem with my left glove; that’s the hand that I use for the rear brake instead of my foot, and I couldn’t stop my bike properly. I spent a few laps in that position and when four or five laps remained I decided to attack. I started overtaking other riders and when I wanted to pass Jorge [Martín], we all braked very late. The suspension jammed and when Jorge turned in, as is normal, I was really close to him and was unable to stop the bike. I hit him, Enea [Bastianini] and Toni Arbolino. I apologise, because it was not my intention to do this. These mistakes shouldn’t be made, much less by a rider like me, who already has three years of experience in the World Championship. Now we have to think about continuing to work; we have a test in Aragon coming up and then the French Grand Prix.”

ALONSO LÓPEZ | 4º +3.515

“At the beginning of the race I went on the gravel when I tried to overtake and I lost a lot of positions. Luckily, I found my fast pace again and started to overtake riders until I caught those at the front. On the penultimate lap I received a warning on the screen that I needed to serve a penalty and I let Toba pass, but I’ve been told that there was another penalty on the last lap. It’s a shame, but I’ve learned a lot in this race and that’s the important thing.”

JEREMY ALCOBA | NC

“It’s a shame for the team, because it had been a very good weekend. We were not that far from the front group -only a second- so we could have caught up with them. However, we started from far back and on the second corner my brake connection broke. We knew that these things could happen when starting so far back, but at least I learnt a lot this weekend. In the World Championship everyone is fast from the off, and you have to give your all right from the beginning.”
