Arón Canet scores points in tight race

Repsol rider finishes eleventh and his teammate, Alonso López, just misses out on points.

Canet lost contact with the leading riders on the opening corners and rode the entire race in a packed second group.

López dropped down the order, but was able to latch onto the group containing Canet and fight to score points. He eventually finished eighteenth.

Canet goes from second to fourth position in the overall standings, 22 points off the series leader, Marco Bezzechi. Alonso López is now sixteenth.

“I made a mistake at the start and I was left behind on the opening laps; if I had started better, I’m sure I could have escaped with the front group. The problem was that I couldn’t overtake on the straight and this, at a circuit like Mugello, is very important. I kept trying to push on the fast corners, but I couldn’t gain positions. These next few weeks I will focus on training to the fullest to be ready for the next race in Barcelona. There I will give my all and I will try to do better.”

“It was a very difficult race from the start. When you lose three tenths, and on the straight four riders pass you at a time, it’s easy to get left behind. At first I struggled to get on the pace but, as the tyres degraded, I changed some details to my riding thanks to what I was seeing from my rivals. This helped me to continue riding with the group. I learned a lot at this race; now I know that I have to try to keep with whoever I have in front, because if not, the rider who come up from behind will overtake me very easily. I’m looking forward to racing again here next season, because I liked this circuit a lot.”
