The Repsol Toyota Rally Team driver, returning to competition after his injury in the Dakar Rally, gets ready with WRC2 driver Alejandro Cachón.
Isidre Esteve returns to action on July 24th at the Baja España Aragón, his first race since recovering from the injury he suffered in the Dakar Rally. He arrives at the event after a day of training with Alejandro Cachón, a competitor for the Toyota Gazoo Racing Spain team, which is also supported by Repsol. The two spent the day experiencing the co-driver’s perspective in each of their respective disciplines.
The Baja España Aragón is a race that Esteve knows very well. This will be the Repsol Toyota Rally driver’s 22nd edition of the competition, behind the wheel of the DKR GR Hilux and accompanied by Txema Villalobos. Henk Lategan will also be competing, along with Brett Cummings, for Toyota Gazoo Racing W2RC. The competition will last three days, with the prologue on Friday the 24th and two stages -on Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, July 26th– covering a total of 865 kilometres, 544 of which are timed.
In preparation, Esteve shared a training day with Alejandro Cachón. The two drivers swapped roles and vehicles to experience firsthand the nuances of two very different disciplines: rally raid and rallying. First, Cachón took the co-driver’s seat in the DKR GR Hilux, with which Esteve demonstrated the full potential of the Dakar vehicle.
Later, Esteve climbed into the co-driver’s seat of the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, the vehicle with which Cachón currently competes in WRC2. The day allowed both to share experiences, compare driving styles, and analyse the significant differences between two vehicles designed for completely different competition scenarios.
