Repsol rider operated on at the USP Dexeus hospital in Barcelona, repairing the right little finger fracture on his right hand suffered this past weekend at the French GP. Marc Márquez attends facility to examine right hand after impact in Le Mans race, prescribed a week of rest.
Podium finisher at the French GP in the Moto3 category, Álex Rins, was operated on this afternoon in Barcelona to repair damage suffered in a Saturday fall at Le Mans. The rider underwent surgery on the little finger of his right hand, in a procedure carried out by Dr. Xavier Mir at the USP Institut Universitari Dexeus de Barcelona. The Repsol rider —Spanish Champion in 2011 and World Championship rookie this season— had picked up the injury in the wet qualifying session for the most recent round of the series.
Rins had suffered a dislocated fracture of the interphalangeal joint of his little finger, in addition to a haematoma on the same finger of his right hand. The head surgeon of Hands and Upper Extremeties at the USP Dexeus hospital, Dr. Mir undertook a drainage of the haematoma and an osteosynthesis of the medial phalange in the operation on Monday afternoon.
The Repsol rider had taken a podium finish at Le Mans despite the discomfort caused by the injury, making up 23 places in only his fourth Grand Prix race. He will remain in hospital for 24 hours under antibiotics and will be able to start functional recovery within the next week.
Marc Márquez, who suffered a heavy blow to his right hand in a crash during the wet Moto2 race, also underwent an examination at the facility and will be resting his right hand —the thumb of which was lightly damaged in the fall— for a week. Neither rider’s participation is in doubt for the next round, the Catalan Grand Prix, which takes place in just under two weeks’ time at Montmeló.
