Bastianini third and Canet eighth in Malaysian GP

Italian takes third podium from six races and Canet climbs four places to finish eighth at Sepang.

Enea Bastianini crossed the line in third place, just 0.039 off second placed Jorge Martín.

The Repsol Moto3 rider was in the lead group for a large part of the race, finishing 0.763s behind the winner, Joan Mir.

Arón Canet fought in an extensive group competing for fifth place, eventually finishing eighth.

Enea Bastianini

“It was a really difficult race, because although I didn’t make a bad start, I was passed by several riders. After two or three laps I realised that I could be at the front if I was able to get into the top positions. I succeeded in that, but Martin and Mir were pushing hard and I had to put in a huge effort to catch them; that wore out my front tyre because it required a lot of hard braking. When I caught them, I tried to take the lead and slow down the group a little to recover. Finally, Martin overtook me and I finished third, although I took risks during the race to try to win.”.

Arón Canet

“It was a very difficult race from the beginning. I pushed from the opening few laps to try to catch the first group, but it was tough. When I reached them, I paid the price for my effort and suffered a big dip in my fitness. On the last few laps I tried to get in a good position and take the best result possible. Mathematically, we can no longer be runners-up in the standings, but we will try to finish third. Now we go to one of my favorite circuits and my home track, where I will race in front of my family and the Valencian fans. That will give me an extra boost to finish the year on the podium and with a good taste in my mouth.”.
