The Repsol Classic Team claimed a double podium finish on the Isla de Mallorca Rally hold last weekend. The Spanish team drivers finished second and third in the two categories of the rally: competition and regularity.
The team consisting of Javier Ortega and Isabel Alcón drove their Jaguar E Type to second in vehicles up to 1965, the top category in international classic racing. Ortega rode a very steady race, and despite the fact that the Majorca roads were not too good for his Jaguar due to the long distance between the car axles, he managed to beat all of his rivals with the exception of the English driver John Sheldon and his competitive and manageable Lotus Elan.
In the regularity category, the Repsol Classic Team consisted of the two Alpine 1.600 cars driven by Arias-Zayas and De Miguel-Basagoiti. Miguel Arias stayed well behind at the start of the race due to some physical problems affecting his co-driver, but managed to gain positions until finishing seventh in the general standings. Carlos de Miguel didn’t start too well either in the first special stage, but he climbed up to second place just before the last timed stage. A time penalty made him lose the second place for only half a second.
The Repsol Classic Team is now preparing for Tour Auto, one of the most important classic car rallies of the season. The top 200 cars in the world will gather for the French rally, with Repsol being the only Spanish team to take part in the competition. The fact that almost forty Ferrari classic cars are inscribed to participate shows the high level of this race. The Repsol Classic Team will be represented by four teams: Arias-Zayas (Alpine 1.600), Ortega-Alcón (Jaguar E), De Miguel-Basagoiti (Ferrari 275 GTB) and Steuer-Steuer (Fiat 124 Abarth).
