The World Championship gets closer to its halfway point with Repsol riders in the lead
Seventh round of the 2002 World Championship, the Dutch Grand Prix will receive the premier category with Valentino Rossi, full of strength after five victories out of six Grand Prix, the outstanding leader of the overall classification. He is followed by no other than his teammate Tohru Ukawa, who is 48 points behind the Italian. The thir position is held by another Italian rider, Loris Capirossi, but with a difference of 80 points with regard to Rossi. In the 250cc class the classification is much more contended and despite Fonsi Nieto being still in the lead, the second classified Marco Melandri is only 6 points behind. Third in the classification and, according to Fonsi, his toughest rival in the battle for the title is another Italian, Roberto Rolfo, who is 21 points behind the Spaniard. And while Fonsi is fighting to stay in the lead, his teammate Toni Elias is ninth, hoping to be able to jump up to the fifth place of the classification. In the 125cc class Dani Pedrosa has made a big step forward in the overall classification after his second position at the Catalan Grand Prix. His regularity, finishing all races, and his latest results have allowed him to get on third position, only four points way from the second classified rider, the French Vincent. Poggiali, the leader, keeps himself very strong heading the classification, but his advantage of 25 points is nothing insurmountable at the moment and we will have to watch the coming races carefully. And while Pedrosa is getting closer to the leader, Olivé is thirteenth in the overall classification, a place he will be able to improve as soon as his results begin to be regular.
