Jaime Alguersuari gets his first ever podium finish in the World Series

The sixth round of the World Series 2009 was held this weekend at the legendary circuit of Le Mans, and in the race on Sunday Jaime Alguersuari finished on the third step of the podium. The Repsol driver started 5th and took advantage of his race strategy to  climb two positions during the pit stop, this brought him his best result of the year.

Alguersuari had a start without any complications, defending his position and putting pressure on the driver in front of him, Jon Lancaster, although he climbed later in the race when Charles Pic, who was 3rd, had a puncture on the 5th lap. One lap later he was overtaken by his teammate Oliver Turvey, he then made his obligatory pit stop on the following lap. He himself was overtaken by Miguel Molina but at the same time got ahead of Jon Lancaster & James Walker to move into 3rd place with many other drivers still to make their stop.

There were over 20 laps left but Alguersuari stayed behind Miguel Molina until he was given the chequered flag, he finished less than 4 seconds behind the winner Bertrand Baguette. With this result Alguersuari got 10 more points, and confirmed the improvement seen yesterday, he is now 8th in the overall classification. The next round is in two weeks at the circuit of Portimao in Portugal.

Jaime Alguersuari, 3rd at 3.758 secs.
“This is my first ever podium finish, I am only 19 and do not have as much experience as others in the category. We are making progress in every race. I know Portimao because I did an exhibition with Toro Rosso in 2008. It is a circuit where you can overtake. I hope to get a better result.”
