Joan Mir, in Moto3, and Edgar Pons, in Moto2, won the two races held in MotorLand Aragon and Carmelo Morales achieved the victory in Superbikes.
After the fourth round of the year, the FIM CEV Repsol reached its midpoint in a day in which Moto3 and Moto2 had two races. The rider from Majorca, Joan Mir, was the undisputable winner in the smallest displacement category after achieving a double victory, adding 50 points to his tally that leave him only 6 points behind the current leader, Aron Canet. In the intermediate category, Edgar Pons also won the two races held and now has an advantage of 39 points over the second.
In Superbikes, Carmelo Morales achieved his third consecutive victory of the year in a race in which Kenny Noyes was not able to compete due to an unfortunate accident during the warm up. The current champion of the class hit his head hard and was moved to the Zaragoza hospital to undergo some checks.
The FIM CEV Repsol will take a break now and resume the action at the Albacete Circuit next September 6th for the second and decisive half of the Championship.
Moto3 Junior World Championship
The two Moto3 races held today followed a nearly identical pattern. In both, the rider from Majorca Joan Mir got a crushing victory, dominating from flag to flag and crossing the Finish line with an advantage of more than 11 seconds. The fight for the rest of podium positions was intense and offered the public some exciting duels in the last laps. In the first race, Aron Canet and Stefano Valtulini accompanied Mir on the podium, while on the second it was the turn of the youngest rider of the FIM CEV Repsol, Jaume Masia, and Albert Arenas.
Joan Mir will leave MotorLand Aragon after reducing the advantage of the class’ leader by 34 points, as Aron Canet crashed today in the second race and only has 6 points more than the rider from Majorca. In the third overall position is the Malaysian rider Khairul Idham Pawi, 26 points behind.
Moto2 European Championship
In the intermediate category, the rider from Barcelona, Edgar Pons, also won both races held today. After being consistent during the whole weekend, Pons did not leave any option for his rivals, as he started from pole and built his advantage to take his third and fourth victories of the season. The rider from Barcelona Xavi Vierge and South African Steven Odendaal exchanged the other two podium positions in the two MotorLand Aragon races.
After gathering 50 points today, Edgar Pons increased his lead of the Moto2 class, followed by Xavi Vierge, at 39 points, and Steven Odendaal, 55 points behind.
Superbike European Championship
In the first laps of the Superbike race, Dani Rivas and Ivan Silva took the lead of the race, slowly building some advantage over their rivals. But Carmelo Morales, who had fallen to the sixth place after starting from second, only needed four laps to change the situation and catch the two riders, taking the first position. From that moment on, the rider from Barcelona set a pace impossible to follow by his rivals, which allowed him to reach the Finish line with a comfortable lead, and even set the fastest lap of the race in the last lap. The podium was completed with Dani Rivas, second, and Ivan Silva, third.
In the overall standings, Carmelo Morales keeps the lead after taking his third consecutive victory of the year, followed by Ivan Silva, 33 points behind, and Kenny Noyes, at 34.
Joan Mir – Moto3 first race winner
“I’m very happy! It was a difficult race, because I could escape in the first laps and tried to set my own pace, as we had planned. I want to thank the whole team for their good job, as the bike improved a lot.”
Joan Mir – Moto3 second race winner
“The second race was beautiful. I tried to set the fastest pace I could. I knew that the first lap would be the key to prevent them from following me and I was able to do it well. I’m very happy. The team gave me a fast bike and I must thank them for that. For the championship I think I reduced the disadvantage we had when we arrived, but we’ll focus on a race by race basis and if we can get the title in the end, it will be great. I think that doing my best in each race is the best way to tackle the season and is good to prepare myself for next year.”
Edgar Pons – Moto2 first race winner
“I felt very well the whole weekend and felt comfortable on the bike. The race went very well. At the beginning I was able to push with new tyres, because I had very good grip. I was able to build my advantage and after the first half of the race I started to feel some rebound in front. I decided to reduce a bit, as I had quite a good advantage and I rode calmly, trying not to push to the limit and manage my energy. I’m very happy with this victory.”
Edgar Pons – Moto2 second race winner
“I was able to keep my position from the start and I focused on setting my own pace. This time it was a bit more difficult to escape from the riders that were behind me. I’m very happy to have achieved two victories here. We did a great job, both the team and I. I’m looking forward to the next race in Albacete.”
Carmelo Morales – Superbike race winner
“First of all, I’d like to send my good wishes to Kenny [Noyes], I hope he recovers soon. It was a difficult race due to the heat and the difficulty in choosing the tyres. We were forced to go out with the hard tyres, because the softer ones would not have arrived to the end. Both yesterday and on Friday the bike worked very well and that gave me confidence for the race, as we could keep a consistent pace. When I was able to take the first place I decided to do three laps at my own pace. I’m very happy with the result and with the points I gathered. I want to thank my team and my family.”
