Jorge Navarro claims valuable podium

Repsol rider finishes second in a race affected by rain. A crash ends the day for Aron Canet, who rode as high up as fourth in Argentina.

Raceday was complicated in the Moto3 class in Argentina due to unstable weather conditions at Termas de Rio Hondo, and rain prior to the Moto3 race presented the riders with a track that was both wet and dry in places. In a difficult race, Jorge Navarro was able to handle the situation well and leave the Argentinian GP with 20 points to his name, thanks to his finishing second. He had held onto the position right up to the final corner in a battle with Adam Norrodin –his rival crashing out after being forced into a mistake. Rookie Aron Canet showed great poise in only his second ever Grand Prix, and spent the race in the third group, fighting for fifth place. A crash with three laps remaining meant that he went unrewarded for his efforts, but he nevertheless showed his competitiveness in a group of very experienced riders.

“The hardest thing about today’s race was deciding on the starting grid which tyres we were going to use. This track has good grip and we eventually opted for slicks. The first few laps were used to check the state of the track and I let a few laps go by calmly in order not to take risks. However, when I saw that the group was a little dangerous because there were riders in there who aren’t used to being so high up the order –and could make mistakes–, I decided to put myself at the head of the pack and push. I caught Norrodin and when I saw that Pawi was far ahead, I decided to use caution and kept my pace up until the end. On the last lap I knew Norrodin would try a move, but he had several scares and went down at the last corner. I feel sorry for him, but for us this result is very good.”

Aron Canet

“It was a difficult race. I had never ridden in mixed conditions and this situation is a bit confusing, but it’s true that you learn a lot when you ride in these circumstances. The fight in groups that we had reminded me of the FIM CEV Repsol; I was comfortable and I was able to control the race from the second or third position I occupied in the group. At the end of the race we made a mistake, but we are already thinking about the next race.”
