Marc Márquez has been crowned 125cc World Champion at the Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo Circuit. The Repsol rider, who has had a magnificent season, rounded off the title today in the last Grand Prix of the 2010 season. Márquez, who started with a 17-point advantage over Nico Terol in the standings and from the first spot on the starting grid, put in an intelligent race, finishing fourth.
In this way, the protégé of Emilio Alzamora, 125cc World Champion in 1999 – also with Repsol–, finished off a historic season for Spanish motorcycling, following the titles won by Toni Elías (Moto2) and Jorge Lorenzo (MotoGP). Marc Márquez is the author of the latest success in Spanish motorcycling history, which originated in 1971 when Nieto claimed his first title in the 125cc World Championship, also on a Derbi and with Repsol.
The young rider (Cervera, 1993) has claimed more victories than anyone else this season (10) and has become the eighth Spanish rider to win the 125cc World Championship title. The Repsol rider has taken the fourteenth Spanish title in the class today, taking over from Julián Simón, winner last season and has added his name to a list started by Ángel Nieto and which also includes Jorge Martínez ‘Aspar’, Álex Crivillé, Emilio Alzamora, Dani Pedrosa and Álvaro Bautista.
Márquez has achieved this tough-fought title on a Spanish bike – Derbi RSA – and with fuel and lubricant developed exclusively at the Repsol Technology Centre (CTR), which is located in Móstoles (Madrid). The energy company, which also supplies fuel to the MotoGP Repsol Honda Team, supplied Marc Márquez’ team with over 3,000 litres of fuel to cover the needs of the entire season, in the range of 150 litres per Grand Prix.
With Marc Márquez’ title, Repsol reaches 54 World Championship titles in different motorsport categories since it first entered the world of top competition in 1969.
