Marc Márquez gets a first row start in Germany in a heavy downpour

The Repsol rider was the third fastest. Problems for Redding, Rabat & Beaubier, who are well down the field, on the sixth and seventh rows

After his good times yesterday Marc Márquez confirmed that he is in great form this afternoon and that he is making good progress in the 125cc category. In tomorrow`s race he will be third on the grid behind Bradley Smith and Julián Simón, the two fastest today. His teammate Cameron Beaubier had more difficulties than were foreseen at the start and is at the back of the grid in 28th position just behind Esteve Rabat, 27th.

The Repsol rider had serious problems with his rear wheel, as did his teammate Scott Redding who will be 24th on the grid.

In the second free session, held on a dry track this morning, Márquez showed that he is getting good sensations at the circuit of the Sachsenring, and he finished 4th, six tenths behind Julián Simón. The same sensations were confirmed in classification when the track was completely wet. He was 3rd and proving to be one of the fastest riders around this weekend.

The other Repsol riders had different luck, having had many difficulties on an almost flooded German track. Scott Redding showed signs of a recovery in the morning but in classification, even though he weas in the top ten at the beginning, at the end he was 24th. The Repsol rider tried a softer rear tyre compound and did not feel comfortable, he will start from the sixth row. Just behind him will be his teammate Esteve Rabat, who was not able to take advantage of the new compound supplied by Dunlop for the rainy conditions.

One position behind will be the fourth Repsol rider in this category, Cameron Beaubier. The American had shown a big improvement in the morning session, 15th on a dry track, but in the wet he had big difficulties keeping up with his rivals. The Repsol had problems accelerating at the same points as his rivals, and lost a lot of time, he fell back to 28th position.

“I think we had a good set up for both the wet and dry. The sensations on the bike are good in the two types of conditions, that is something very positive because we do not know what we will have tomorrow. They say it is probable that it will not rain, but we will have to wait and see. In the free practice I was in the top four, and in classification I was 3rd, so I am pleased. In the wet it was more complicated because we did not have a lot of grip, but tomorrow, rain or dry we will do the best we can. I hope to get a good start, keep up with the leading group and finish the race.”

Esteve Rabat, 1’43.768 secs, 38 laps, 139 km.
“The day was a bit of a disaster. We tried a new tyre for the wet on the rear wheel and the result was not what we expected. Owing to the bad performance of the tyre I could not get any confidence on the bike and in these very diffícult conditions that makes things really hard. The weekend so far has been very complicated, changeable weather and we have got worse which is a big shame. Starting at the back means that we have nothing to lose so we will really go for it, the aim being to win some points, although it will be difficult to achieve.”

“This morning things did not go too bad. We had some problems but the bike worked well. Then it began to rain before the classification and when I went out with soft tyres things went well but when I changed to even softer tyres things just got worse. I had no sensations from the rear tyre when I accelerated. I hope that we can improve the set up a bit more tomorrow, as well as the sensations I am getting. Starting at the back of the field means we have to fight really hard and if the race is in the dry things should not go too badly, but if it rains we will see what happens.”

Cameron Beaubier, 1’43.886 secs, 37 laps, 136 km. >> Audio
“I did a lot of laps, above all at the beginning, because I did not have good sensations and I was trying to gain more confidence bit by bit, but I carried on putting in slow laps. Coming out of the fast corners, above all on the left-handers, I could not open the throttle because the rear wheel began to spin. I was going very slowly, so I just hope that tomorrow I get better sensations, and I can go faster. I hope to get a good start and be a bit closer to the front. If it rains we will have to ride very carefully because there will be a lot of falls for sure.”
