Emilio Alzamora’s pupils win the two Moto3 races. Edgar Pons, in Moto2, and Carmelo Morales, in Superbike, also get on the first step of the podium at the FIM CEV Repsol.
The Jerez Circuit held the first round of the FIM CEV Repsol, where Maria Herrera and Fabio Quartararo divided the first and second position among themselves in the two races of the Moto3 class held today, with one win for each. With this result, the two riders leave the Andalusian track as leaders of the overall standings, tied with 45 points.
In Moto2, Edgar Pons was the winner after taking advantage of a double crash of Sebas Porto and Jesko Raffin in the last corner. Carmelo Morales achieved the victory in the biggest displacement class in this first round of the series, something he had never been able to do in previous editions.
The FIM CEV Repsol will resume the action next May 18th at Le Mans for the Moto3 riders and on June 8th at MotorLAnd Aragon, this time with all the classes of the Championship.
Moto3
Maria Herrera and Fabio Quartararo did their best in the double race that took place in Jerez. The two riders did not leave any option to their rivals and escaped quite easily from the beginning in both races. In their fight for victory, the French rider had the upper hand the first time after setting a searing pace in the last laps. In the second race, it was Maria’s turn and after overtaking her team mate at the finish straight, she passed the chequered flag in first place with an 11-thousandths advantage. The rider from Galicia Gabriel Rodrigo and Italian Andrea Migno took turns to get on the last step of the podium.
After their wins, Herrera and Quartararo will arrive to the next round –in France, next May 18th– tied in the first position of Moto3 overall standings.

“Today’s race went very well. I had a good start; although in the first corner Maria [Herrera] overtook me and got the first place. I was able to overtake her on the straight and to set a very good pace. We slowly escaped from the rest and some laps later I let her pass me to preserve the tyres. In the last laps I could overtake her and win the race. I’m very happy with this result”.

“I started the same as in the first race and tried to push. Fabio [Quartararo] overtook me in the same place. Then we built our advantage over the rest. I waited until the end of the race to pass him and in the first race I couldn’t do it, but in the second I overtook him. The tyres were worn and I didn’t want to take risks on the fast corners, although I set a good pace and I could take advantage of my weight to overtake on the straight.”
Moto2
As many other times in this circuit, the last corner was decisive for the outcome of the race. Swiss Jesko Raffin and Argentinean Sebas Porto dominated the race most of the time, and even offered a beautiful battle in the last lap until, in corner 13, Porto fell while trying to overtake Raffin on the inside and knocked the Swiss rider. In the end, victory went to Edgar Pons, followed by German Florian Alt and French Alan Techer. Jesko Raffin was not able to start his bike again to finish the race, while Porto could start it and finished fourth.

“The first thing I want to say is that I’m sorry my team mate [Jesko Raffin] crashed. He was doing a great race and he had bad luck in the last lap and crashed. It was a shame, but I’m sure he will be luckier in the future and he will do very well. We were having a very hard weekend, but after this win I’m very happy, because we have been working hard in winter with my brother and this is a great result.”
Superbike
In the biggest-displacement class, Kenny Noyes and Dani Rivas, who started from first and second in the grid, respectively, both suffered separate crashes. In the last part of the race, Carmelo Morales, Santi Barragan and Ivan Silva were all fighting for victory in Jerez. Nevertheless, lap after lap, Morales kept strengthening his first position and he finally crossed the chequered flag with an advantage of more than two seconds. The rider from Barcelona received the first 25 points of the championship, with Barragan, second, and Silva, third, with him on the podium.

“We did a very good preseason, but our rivals surprised here in Jerez. During this weekend’s practice sessions we lack some grip, but the team was able to find the right path for the set-up. I am very happy, because I had never won the first race of the CEV Repsol and it was one of the challenges I wanted to achieve. Despite the fact that I have been competing in this Championship for some seasons already, I have the same motivation as the first time.”
