Bulega wins the Moto3 Junior World Championship title and Pons the European Moto2 Championship. Carmelo Morales, who secured the Superbikes title in Jerez, took his eight win of the year.

The Ricardo Tormo Circuit saw today the finale of yet another FIM CEV Repsol season in an exciting racing day where both in Moto3 and Moto2 needed two races to decide its champions. Italian Nicolo Bulega took the Junior World Championship after finishing today fourth and third while Albert Arenas won the two races and finished in runner-up position by only four points. In Moto2, Edgar Pons managed his 21-points advantage over Xavi Vierge and took the European Championship by finishing second in the two races held today, just behind Vierge, who ended in the runner-up position.

In Superbikes, Carmelo Morales put the icing on top of his great season by taking his eighth win of the year, after already securing the European Championship title in the previous round in Jerez.

Moto3 Junior World Championship

After the first Moto3 race, only 13 points separated the leader, Nicolo Bulega, from the second overall and winner of the race Albert Arenas. They were followed closely by Aron Canet –who crashed after a hit with Dalla Porta– and Joan Mir. And the Junior World Championship title would not be decided until the last corner of the last race, where the four contestants arrived together with Dalla Porta, who crashed again, dragging Joan Mir with him. Arenas was able to get out first and hold his ground until the finish line, just ahead of Canet –who stood the pain of his injured right foot– and Italian Bulega, who was third and finally took the title.

After his two wins today, Albert Arenas finished runner up in the Junior World Championship, just four points behind Bulega and ahead of Canet, who was third overall.

Moto2 European Championship
The intermediate category also had to wait until the end of the two races to decide the title winner. Edgar Pons managed perfectly his 21-points advantage over the other contestant for the title, Xavi Vierge, who did all he could, winning the two races held today, but saw Pons finishing second in both races and thus securing the Moto2 European Championship by only 11 points over Vierge.

Superbike European Championship

The biggest displacement category had only one race today at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit. With the title already secured, Carmelo Morales took the lead of the race in the first corner – after starting second – and led the race to take a crushing victory with an advantage of more than 9 seconds. Robertino Pietri, Maximilian Scheib and Adrián Bonastre battled for the other two podium races in an exciting fight that was finally decided when Pietri crashed four laps before the end, leaving Scheib second and Bonastre, third.

Today Carmelo Morales took his eight win from eleven possible victories, thus ending the season with 249 points, followed by Adrián Bonastre, runner-up after his result today, 108 points behind, and Robertino Pietri, 121 behind the leader.

Albert Arenas

Moto3 first race winner

“I crashed in the first right-hand corner, probably because the tyre was still cold, but I was able to go back to the race and I knew that in such a narrow track anything could happen, as it did. A red flag allowed me to restart and I took it easy, without thinking about the championship or about crashing, I just did my own race. I enjoyed it a lot and I was among the top places the whole race, which was 9 laps. My strategy was to overtake the first in the last corner, but Aron [Canet] passed me and so I had two riders in front. I did try, anyway, and I was able to pass them with a great braking. I took risks and it worked.”

Albert Arenas

Moto3 second race winner

“It was a fun race. This time I decided to stay behind and control the race from there. The strategy in the end was similar to that of the first race. We were able to overtake Joan [Mir] in the last corner and we took the win. We’re very happy because finishing the year with two victories is a very positive outcome and we were also very competitive in Jerez. For the Championship, it is a pity that we couldn’t secure the win by just a few points, but I didn’t have too many chances to win until we finished the two Jerez races and we found ourselves in the battle. We did our best, which is the most important, and were able to win both races, which was our main aim.”

Nicolo Bulega

Moto3 Junior World Championship Champion

“In the last lap I knew that if Albert [Arenas] won, I should be fourth and when I was first, Mir and Albert overtook me, but I was able to be third after the last lap and win the championship. I think today I’m the happiest guy in the world. I’m very happy and want to thank my team, my friends and my parents, that supported me the whole season. Next year I’ll be in the World Championship and I hope I’ll do well there too”.

Xavi Vierge

Moto2 first race winner

“We arrived this weekend with a clear objective: to finish ahead of Edgar [Pons] and reduce his margin. I felt very comfortable with the bike the whole weekend and I could set a good pace. Today, in the race, I tried to escape but Edgar followed me and when I crossed the finish line what I had to do was look back and see if he was there. I want to congratulate him for a great job..”

Xavi Vierge

Moto2 second race winner

“It was very difficult to win the Championship, but I went out to this race to have fun and I pushed as much as I could to do a good race and feel proud of my performance. I’m very happy to finish the Championship like this, because we were very strong. I want to congratulate everyone here, but specially Edgar [Pons] for the great season he did. Next year we’ll keep fighting, but in the World Championship.”

Edgar Pons

Moto2 European Championship Winner

“I knew the race would be tough, specially mentally, because as Xavi [Vierge] was pushing, I wanted to do it to, but I knew what was at stake and I didn’t want to make any mistake. So I decided to take it calmly and control the distance with the ones behind, trying to forget about Xavi, although I wanted to fight with him, I needed to get the points I needed. I’m very happy with the season we’ve done. We started very strong and in the end we could focus on the Championship. The team did a great job, the bike always worked perfectly and I’m already looking forward to the next year”.

Carmelo Morales

Superbike race winner

“The race went very well, although the weekend was difficult because we had some electronic issues that didn’t allow me to be fast. But today we could solve it and since the warm up I felt very well, the bike and the tyres worked perfectly in the race. I must thank my team because they worked very well with the new bike and I could be on top. I’m very happy and I hope next season I’ll be able to improve and keep enjoying this sport”.
