  • Repsol Honda have 7 wins and 19 podiums in Malaysia.
  • Between them, Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez have shared victories on the last three visits to Malaysia: Pedrosa won in 2012 and 2013, Marquez in 2014.
  • Fabio Quartararo will not participate in Malaysia in order to recover from his injured right ankle.

Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, winners in Australia and Japan, this weekend take on the Malaysian GP, where both have enjoyed victories in the last three seasons.

The Repsol Honda team complete the flyaway stage of the season this weekend in Malaysia, after successful visits to Japan and Australia. Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez were the winners of the last two races, and their experience gained during the preseason test in Sepang makes them two of the leading candidates for victory this weekend. The precedents are good, after the reigning World Champion triumphed at Sepang a year ago and Pedrosa the previous two seasons.

In Moto3, Jorge Navarro returns to a track where last year he took his joint best result of the season – twelfth. He does so after several races fighting for the victory, in which he has achieved two podiums and missed out on a third that got away last Sunday by just nine thousandths of a second. For Maria Herrera, the challenge will be to adapt a new layout, with motivation from her career best result obtained at Phillip Island. Fabio Quartararo will not be in action this weekend, having elected against taking the start in Japan and Australia. He is back in Europe to continue his recovery from a right foot injury.

Marc Marquez

“After a wonderful victory in Australia we are on our way to Malaysia and hoping to continue this good run for Honda, and end the season on a high. We do a lot of testing at Sepang and it’s a circuit I enjoy and where our bike tends to work well. As always, getting the best setup is key especially in the braking so we will have to work hard on Friday and Saturday to prepare for the race.”

Dani Pedrosa

“I’m reasonably happy with the result in Phillip Island but now we are on our way to Sepang and hoping to step back on the podium. Obviously we all know this track very well from the testing we do there each year, and understand how physically demanding it is due to the intense weather. This track has a bit of everything – fast and slow corners, hard braking and long straights ‒ so it will be important to get a good setup to give ourselves the best chance come Sunday.”

Jorge Navarro

“We arrive strong for the final round of the flyaways, after two podiums in Aragon and Japan and almost doing it again in Australia. We are in a good moment and we must make the most of this. Sepang is a circuit that could be good for us, due to the type of corners it has. There are several heavy braking sections and some more flowing corners, where I think our bike will work well. I think we can apply what we have learned over these last few races, in which we have taken a step forward. It will also be important to be well hydrated throughout the weekend to beat the heat and fatigue, although it is something we’ve worked on in my training.”

Maria Herrera

“In Malaysia we will have to work hard from Friday, because once again it’s a new track for me. I really want to get familiar with it and get back on the bike, especially after the good feelings we had in Australia. It is not a track with as fast corners as in Phillip Island, which suited me, but apart from two heavy braking points and long straights, there is a twisty section that I am sure I will like.”
