Repsol riders were the great protagonists of the first timed practice sessions of the Grand Prix, scoring the first round of the World Motorcycling Championship 2002.
In the new MotoGP class, four drivers have alternated during the qualifying session at the top, the two riders from Team Repsol Honda MotoGP Valentino Rossi and Tohru Ukawa, together with the Japanese Daijiro Katoh and Italian Loris Capirossi, have staged a nice duel fighting for first place. In the end, Capirossi has won the first provisional pole of the season, followed closely by Valentino Rossi and Tohru Ukawa, second and third respectively.
In 250 GP, Fonsi Nieto and Toni Elias have been maintained during the qualifying session between the top eight. Ten minutes from time, Nieto has forced the pace to gain second place finish, while teammate Elijah remained in the second row of the grid with the eighth fastest time.
In 125 GP, young Daniel Pedrosa, with just sixteen years has confirmed that the records marked during winter testing have been coincidental. Fastest time in free practice for the morning, Pedrosa has remained among the top six throughout the qualifying session, finally occupying the second position on the provisional grid.
