Rins fifth and Marquez sixth at Indianapolis

After fighting for the top positions throughout the race, Repsol riders unfortunate not to podium at The Brickyard.

Alex Rins and Alex Marquez both had strong performances today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but were unlucky on the last lap of the race. After fighting for the top positions throughout the 23 laps, the duo finally had to settle for fifth (Rins) and sixth (Marquez).

The race was typical of the Moto3 class, with a large leading group of more than 10 riders who looked to conserve their tyres and put themselves in the best possible position for the final lap. Along with the two Repsol riders, Miller, Guevara, Vazquez, Fenati, Binder and Masbou were amongst those looking to break away.

On the last lap the overtaking began and Rins and Marquez ‒hampered by other riders‒ were unable to reach the finish line in podium positions. Victory today went to their fellow Spaniard, Efren Vazquez.

After this result, Marquez is third overall and 25 points behind series leader Jack Miller. Rins is fifth, 40 points off the top.

“I’m happy, but obviously I would liked to have finished higher up the order. After how the weekend went, this is not a bad result and I have to thank the team; they helped me a lot and I was able to get up into the front group. I started from far back, but I started well. I even thought that perhaps I had jumped the start. It wasn’t too hard to get to the front group and from that moment on I started to think about where I could overtake and where I needed to wait. In the end I was a bit hasty, passing Miller on the fast corner of the final lap. He passed me back and I couldn’t retake the position. I’m happy with the end result, because in this category and when you are part of a group like that, you can just as easily win as finish tenth”.

“I think we’ve had a good weekend and in the race we were fighting at all times for the podium and the victory. That’s what matters. We’ve lost points to Miller; our goal was to finish ahead of him and we didn’t quite manage it. In preparation for the upcoming races we have to be more careful, because I made mistakes that I cannot afford to repeat, and what we have to do is keep working in this way. I think if we continue like this then the results will come, as happened at Montmeló and Assen”.
