Sergio García takes first Moto3 World Championship podium

Repsol Moto3 rider takes second place in Malaysia. Alonso López suffers bad luck, colliding with the bike of another rider who had crashed

Sergio García made a great comeback after being down in 18th position on Lap 4. He gradually regained ground before reaching the four riders at the front of the race.

The Repsol rider was up into fourth, 4 laps from the end, and on a great last lap gained two positions to cross the finish line in second place.

Alonso López made a good start from tenth place on the grid. When he was up into fifth position, a crash by a rider at Turn 4 of Lap 5 caused another rider to collide with his motorcycle. In turn, Lopez could not avoid the impact with the second rider’s bike and went down.

“I made a very good start, went on the outside and managed to maintain my grid position. Little by little I started climbing up the order and I was comfortable. I settled in among the top five, but then a rider fell and I wasn’t able to avoid his bike. Even so, I’m happy with the weekend we had, since we had a good pace and were competitive. What I take away is that we are getting stronger every time.”

“I’m very happy. I did not expect to finish the flyaways like this, since this is a tough circuit, although I went very well from the beginning. It was a very tough race, very hot and with a lot of overtaking. I knew I could be in the front group, so I overtook other riders steadily. On the last lap I began to believe that the podium was possible, but on the last corner I was right on the limit and thought I might crash. I was able to stay on the bike and reach the finish line. It has been a long and difficult journey to get here, because this year we have struggled in some aspects. We deserved this moment and it has finally arrived. I dedicate the podium to my family, my grandfather, and Afridza, whose death yesterday has been very hard for us”.
