- – If Alex Marquez finishes on the podium, he will automatically become World Champion –he has an 11-point lead over his nearest rival.
Repsol Honda to close another historic season in front of the Spanish fans. Alex Marquez holds 11-point lead heading into most important Grand Prix of his career to date.
The 2014 season closes this weekend with the Valencian Grand Prix, ending an historic year in which Marc Marquez retained the MotoGP title. The event will also feature the excitement of a title decider in the Moto3 category, where Repsol rider Alex Marquez could achieve his dream of being crowned World Champion and join his brother in topping his class this season.
After taking a twelfth win of the year in Malaysia, equalling the record set by Mick Doohan in 1997, Marc Marquez will have the incentive of going one better than the legendary Australian at the season finale. Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa will also be one of the leading candidates for the win at a circuit where he holds more victories than anyone, with three in MotoGP, two in 250cc and one in 125cc.
In Moto3, Alex Marquez leads the way heading into the final round of the World Championship and will have a second chance to secure the title. The eleven-point lead held by the Repsol rider in the overall standings could play an important role in the Valencian GP, as a podium finish would mathematically make him World Champion. For both him and his teammate, Alex Rins, Valencia will be a final race in Moto3 before making the jump up to Moto2. FIM CEV Repsol rider, Maria Herrera, will have another opportunity to ride as a wildcard alongside the best racers on the planet.
Marc Marquez
“The past month has been a whirlwind and winning the Championship in Japan seems like a long time ago now! After Malaysia we attended an event with Honda and Alpinestars in Thailand on the way home and then had a few days to relax in Spain and do some training before leaving for Milan to visit the EICMA show. It was a really good event with many people there, I really appreciate all the kind words from everyone I met! Now we head to Valencia for the final race of an incredible season. It’s always nice to race in front of the home fans and this year will be much more relaxed and I will be able to enjoy it without any pressure!”
Dani Pedrosa
“Obviously I’m now out of the race for second or third in the Championship, especially after the events in Malaysia, but I’m looking forward to going to Valencia and finishing the season on a high. This is always a special race for me, the fans are fantastic and they create a wonderful atmosphere. My results here in the past have been strong and this weekend I hope to repeat this and fight for victory on Sunday!”
Álex Rins
“The Ricardo Tormo circuit is quite quirky and slow. Although there is a long straight, slipstreaming is not as critical as at other tracks. It will be my last race in the Moto3 class, so it will be special. We don’t have a chance of winning the title now, but we will try to maintain third place and have fun on the bike, which is what matters.”
Álex Márquez
“The most important thing is that we arrive as leaders to Valencia after a difficult race in Malaysia. We will have to stay focused to the maximum, just as we did there. I also want to enjoy my last race in the Moto3 class. We will go for the win, as we have always done, but what matters is that we ride our own race and try to seal the title.”
María Herrera
“I am very excited about the wildcard for the Valencian GP. The test we did at the Cheste circuit in October was great, we rode fast and I was happy with the times I set. The layout is very well suited to my riding and that motivates me. I think I can do well and I also go there with a lot of desire to compete, having not been able to do so in the last race of the FIM CEV Repsol in Portimao because of a mechanical problem off the start. I will learn a lot in this race because Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 will be fighting for the title. It motivates me to participate in a race at such a key moment in the championship, in which I hope to do well. We will work hard throughout the weekend to do that.”
